When your birthday is on Independence Day, it only makes sense to have a 4th of July themed cake smash session! As usual, I always start first birthday sessions with portraits of the child. This session, those photos consisted of her on white flokati fur surrounded by desert foliage and cactus at Papago Park. I call it, “simplicity with purpose.” For portraits, I want the focus to be on the child and limit the usage of props for this segment.
Penelope was shy at first and not quite sure what to make of the desert. Maybe because it was about seven o’clock in the morning or maybe because the Phoenix, Arizona summer heat was beginning to creep up on us. However, with a lot boisterous movements and sounds we managed to get a few smiles out of her here and there. I could tell mom was getting a little worried that she wouldn’t get smiling portraits from the session but if it’s one thing I am good it – it’s capturing those fleeting moments that are here and gone in the blink of an eye.
When I met with mom for her View & Order Appointment a few weeks later, she was amazed at how many great photos I managed to get of Penelope. She was sure there may have only been a few good photos from our time together, however she could not stop swooning over the images. Client reactions like that are one of the best parts of my job. I was so excited for the opportunity to wow her and show her that she picked the right photographer to capture such a special moment for her daughter.
